Unbelievably good and groundbreaking, even at a point in heavy metal history when every third band sounds more like Pink Floyd than Pantera. The obvious stadium song is Steambreather, with its “I wonder who I am/I’m afraid of myself” earworm. Clandestiny is the most progged-out tune, throwing a theremin and what sounds like the voices of the Cylons into the mix, while the huge album-closer Jaguar God is seven minutes of luxurious textures, including acoustic guitar, piano and heads-down grind. Take Roots Remain, with its near-ambient midsection, and Word To The Wise, with layers of spiralling guitar heading starwards. Yes, the basic recipe on album seven is metal usually made up of laborious, crunchy grooves with one of Mastodon’s three singers bellowing out lyrics about the Nazca lines or the hidden caverns of the psyche – but they often depart from this template to create astounding music. Each release is such an immersive experience that you need dozens of plays to get to know each one, but if you make that effort, the rewards are tremendous.
